A New Parent's Guide to Baby RegistriesReasons to Create a Gift Registry and Where to RegisterRegistering for gifts has benefits for the parent(s)-to-be as well as the baby shower guests.
Baby Gift Registries Serve Several PurposesThey ward off duplicate shower gifts. Store gift registries, such as the one at Target, are updated electronically as purchases are made from it as long as the customer lets the cashier know the item is from a gift registry. This allows gift givers to see what everyone else has purchased so the mother-to-be doesn’t end up with duplicate items. Gifts purchased from the registry will fit the parents’ personal tastes. Expectant parents can rest assured that the majority of gifts they receive will fit their personal tastes if shower guests are informed about the registry. This tactic is not foolproof, however. There will always be rogue shower guests who purchase items they believe the mother “forgot” to put on the registry or in a style that suits their own preferences. They serve as a checklist of items to purchase before the baby is born. Odds are that the mother-to-be placed most items that a newborn requires on the gift registry; the registry thus serves as an automatic way to track what needs to be purchased before the baby arrives. Many expectant mothers are forgetful during pregnancy (even if they weren’t beforehand), and a tracking list of items to purchase is just what they need to stay on track. Just before the baby is born, the mother can refer to the gift registry to review items that haven’t been purchased to see if any necessities have been overlooked. Where to Register for Baby GiftsExpectant mothers have many options when it comes to baby registries. Big-box retailers like Wal-Mart and Target offer this service; the benefit of using a retailer with a national presence is that most people who want to purchase a gift can do so in person at their area store. Although, even if the guest does not have a store location close by, most large retailers offer the option to make purchases online. Some department stores, such as JCPenney, also offer baby gift registries. Baby-specific stores like Babies R Us are a logical choice. Yet another option is to create an online registry. MyRegistry and ShowerYourBaby are two options for doing this. Once the decision has been made to create a baby gift registry and the exact registry provider has been identified, expectant mothers must consider the type and number of gifts to put on the registry.
