Many people want to use cloth diapers to save money only to find out that cloth diapers are expensive. However, it is possible to find cheap cloth diapers.

Anyone that says cloth diapers are inexpensive and an easy way to save money hasn’t seen the price of new cloth diapers. Fitted diapers can cost between $10 and $25 apiece. That is not exactly a thrifty price when a baby needs eight to ten diapers a day.

Luckily, there are options for inexpensive cloth diapering. Parents can look for discount cloth diapers, used diapers and homemade alternatives.

Used Cloth Diapers

To realize the biggest discount on cloth diapers, buy used. Cloth diapers can sometimes be found at garage sales, but the best place to find used cloth diapers is on-line message boards. Parenting boards that have trading posts will often have cloth diapers and diaper wraps for sale or trade.

The cloth diapers for sale on these boards are usually in great condition. If a picture is not posted with the ad, ask to see a picture before making a purchase to determine the quality of the diapers. After receiving used cloth diapers, strip them in the washing machine to remove any soap build-up that would prevent the diapers from being as absorbent as they could be.

Gerber Pre-fold Diapers

Readily available at department stores like Wal-Mart and Target, Gerber pre-fold diapers are an inexpensive way to begin cloth diapering. They cost about $12 for a package of six diapers, or roughly $2 a diaper. Thrifty parents can sometimes find them on sale for less.

The Gerber diapers are a well-performing, easy to use cloth diaper. They are absorbent and do not stain easily. Since they are available locally for most people, they do not have to be ordered over the internet, thus saving shipping costs.

Homemade Cloth Diapers

Another way to build a supply of inexpensive cloth diapers is to make them from recycled material. This requires some skill at the sewing machine for making fitted diapers. But, even those with limited sewing knowledge can make pre-fold diapers.

Old t-shirts and flannel shirts can be used to make truly inexpensive pre-fold diapers. Garage sales are a great source of clothing that can be used for fabric.

Inexpensive cloth diapering is possible. Find discount cloth diapers at garage sales and on-line trading posts. Use the inexpensive Gerber pre-fold diapers or sew homemade diapers out of recycled material.
