The Tripp Trapp chair is unique: its ergonomic design is good for posture. There is no tray so that baby can sit up to the table with the family, good for social skills.

The Tripp Trapp chair was launched by the Norwegian company Stokke in 1972 and is now available throughout the developed world, in about fifty countries. It has an adjustable foot rest so that a child’s legs and feet are not left dangling. By providing a firm footing, Stokke argues, children can sit more comfortably, change position and the seating is better for the developing spine than traditional high chairs and booster seats. Without a tray a baby can sit up to the table with the family.

The Wooden Baby High Chair

The baby set for children 6-18 months and cushions are sold separately, this whole kit currently retails at approximately $385 in the U.S. or £155 in the U.K., (Feb. 2009). The chair alone is a little over $240, £100 and further accessories are also available.

The Advantages of the Tripp Trapp Chair

  • Baby sits up to the table at the correct height with the rest of the family to eat and play, good for social skills.
  • Foot support, which enhances posture.
  • The chair lasts a life time as it adjusts to suit a child of any height from 6 months old into adulthood.
  • A solid chair made from beech wood it is hard wearing and sturdy.
  • It is stylish, comes in natural wood or a variety of colours.
  • Good resale potential – used Tripp Trapp chairs sell well reaching prices than can be 50% or more of the price of a new chair (Ebay, February 2009).
  • Excellent value for money – if used to its full potential throughout the childhood years.

The Disadvantages of the Stokke Chair

  • Price, they are among the most expensive high chairs and toddlers’ seats.
  • Size, the chairs are bulky and do not fold away.
  • No tray as the chairs are designed to be pushed up to the main table, may be a problem.

A Quality Tripp Trapp High Chair for Babies

Stokke reports that the chair meets the requirements of all international safety standards. It is very stable and designed to be placed within reach of the dining table. With this in mind, a parent must be aware of any potential dangers such as things within reach of hands or feet, including the possibility of pushing and toppling. Other high chairs are recommended to be placed away from furniture to prevent such risks.

German company Ergo:Design makes the clic clac tray specifically to fit only this chair. The clic clac may be an ideal solution for some households but this product is not endorsed by Stokke.

The Tripp Trapp Chair by Stokke is a sturdy piece of furniture which is excellent value for money. It might not be suitable for all families, especially those on a tight budget or living in cramped accommodation. As with all high chairs, the child’s guardians must supervise its use to ensure child safety.

They do sell a tray attachment if you prefer that for a baby, but the idea is to not have a tray and have the baby or child at the table with the family. Also, it is so small and I would NOT call it "bulky". It fits right in with the dinig chairs at the table instead of being a huge plastic eye sore behind the table in the room like most high chairs. I love it!
