Rear-facing Pushchairs (or Strollers) for TwinsParent Facing, Side-by-Side Prams & Buggies for Newborn Twins
A guide to buggies or strollers pushchairs which are suitable for newborn baby twins. Prams which also enable the twins to travel side by side and face the parents.
For a parent looking for a rear facing pushchair the number of models suitable for twins is limited. Side by side strollers allow a clear and equal view of both children, and as they get older they are not going to compete for the seat with the best view. There are a few tandem pushchairs which face the rear also face the rear but have the disadvantage of only clear eye contact with one child and little or no sight of the child at the front. Tandems are not included in this article. From Twin Pram to Twin, Parent Facing PushchairThree side by side models which can look like a traditional pram with carrycots and convert to a modern pushchair are:
These three models of buggy all have the following features:
The most obvious difference between these strollers is appearance. The shape of the Premier Twin is like a traditional pram, however, it is available in a range of colours and fabrics including a leatherette with a modern flower print. Team Alu S4 is shaped like a 3 wheeler, although it has 4 and is available in mute dark colours. City is available in a range of bold colours including aqua, red and green, it appears the most futuristic in design with large wheels at the rear and small wheels at the front. Price wise these strollers are available for between £450-£650 for the complete package, so shopping around for the best price can be worthwhile. The carrycots are only included as standard with the Premier Twin; the carrycots are an extra purchase with the City Twin (approx £90 each) and the Team Alu S4. A feature that sets the City apart is that any combination of seats/carrycot can be used facing either direction. For example, the toddler seat can be facing direction of travel whilst a carry cot is facing the parent. This feature might be useful for children of different ages but is unlikely to be useful for twins. Team Alu S4 by Teutonia specification
Premier Twin by Leebruss specification
City Twin by First Wheels specification
Other Rear Facing PramsThere are a number of other models and manufacturers to consider. Emmaljunga continues to make side by side twin prams, whereas Bertini currently does not. Used Bertini strollers are widely available in very good condition. Both of these companies have made prams which can face either direction by altering the position of the handle. Like the three model above, the Baby Style Lux Twin Classic (width 79cm, folded size: W 79 x L 85 x H 41cm) seat unit can be fitted to face either direction direction. What is different is that the two individual reclining seats lie flat for new born but are not replaced by a seperate carry cot or seat unit. Unlike most twin models it also has a large but old fashioned shopping basket. It is available inblack or white fabric and is generally a less expensive buggy than any of the other models in this article. Disadvantages of the Side by Side Twin PramsThere are currently no side by side twin buggies which comprise part of a travel system. There are some parent facing tandem strollers which are compatible with car seats to form a travel system for twins. They are wide and bulky, wider than most standard front doors and may be hard to fit in the car. They are heavy and many report that they are difficult to lift into a car with out help. Modern parent facing prams are more expensive than forward facing twin strollers. Used, second hand strollers could be good value. In this market parents could also look for twin prams made by Bertini, which are no longer being manufactured.
